# Competency Areas

Competency areas are the most general elements of the competency framework used to group competencies. The competencies are united into groups and groups belong to different areas. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img1217.png)

Follow these steps to create competency areas:

1. Go to **Settings > Settings and Configuration > Performance**.
2. Click **Competencies** in the left panel and click **Edit** next to the **Competency Areas** setting name on the **Basic** tab. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img441(2).png)
3. The **Competency Areas** list will open in spreadsheet view where you can directly edit the information you need.

4. Enter the competency area name into the **Title** column and a short description of the area into the **Description** column.
