# Competency Criteria Types

Before setting up the competency assessment criteria, define the criteria types:

1. Go to **Settings > Settings and Configuration > Performance**.
2. Click **Competencies** in the left panel and click **Edit** next to the **Competency Level Descriptions** setting name on the **Advanced** tab. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img456(5).png)
3. The **Competency Criteria Types** list will open in spreadsheet view where you can directly edit the information you need. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img455(4).png)
4. Enter the name of the criteria type into the **Competency Criteria Type** column.

When creating a criterion, you’ll specify which type it belongs to.
