# Custom Absence Types (Dynamic Absences)

The system has a feature that allows dynamically creating customized general absence types in addition to vacation, sickness, etc. Dynamic absences may have subtypes created and stored in a custom list.

Dynamic absences functionality is available after a Lanteria Support Engineer [turns on](/v1/docs/enable-dynamic-absences-mode) a special Dynamic Absences mode.

In order to start using the functionality, HR should do the following:

1. [Create and configure a dynamic absence](/v1/docs/create-and-configure-dynamic-absence)
2. [Add dynamic absence section](/v1/docs/adding-a-custom-section-to-an-absence-plan) to the absence plan
3. [Assign absence plan](/v1/docs/assign-absence-plan) to employees
