# Learning Material Categories

The learning materials in the catalog are displayed by category. The categories can be arranged into a multi-level hierarchy.

Follow these steps to create a learning material category:

1. Go to **Settings > Settings and Configuration > Learning**.
2. Click **Learning Catalog** in the left panel and click **Edit** next to the **Learning Material Categories** setting name on the **Basic** tab. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img402(2).png)
3. The **Learning Material Categories** form will open with learning material categories displayed in accordance with categories hierarchy.![](https://cdn.document360.io/c315c68d-2799-4fcc-9a39-084315b58f14/Images/Documentation/img147(1).png)

5. Enter the category name into the **Title** field.
6. If you are creating a subcategory, select the parent category from the drop-down list in the **Parent Category** field.*Note**Please note that when selecting a parent learning material category in the Learning Catalog or learning reports, information related to the subcategories will be displayed as well.*
7. Another way to add a subcategory is to click **Add subcategory** next to the parent category name. This will open the same form as in step 4, but with the **Parent Category** field already filled in.
8. Click **Edit** next to the necessary category name to change it.

You will be able to select a category for each learning material you upload to the catalog.
